My research has two main avenues: cetaceans (from foraging to social life and conservation) and impacts of underwater acoustic pollution, both of them with implications on conservation biology. I combine work at CREEM with continuing a long-term cetacean research line at the University of La Laguna, in the Canary Islands, where I will work from May 2017. 

My work at CREEM is funded by the EU Horizon2020 project ECOSOUND, summarized below:


Defining a Good Environmental Status for ocean noise within the European Marine Framework Strategy is challenged by our limited knowledge about noise effects on marine fauna. ECOSOUND proposes that there are two broad types of mechanisms of noise impact on individual animals, both with potential population-level effects: bottom-up, i.e. noise responses that operate at the genetic, cellular or physiological level, which are likely to be conserved across taxa; and top-down, i.e. behavioural reactions driven by the life style of each species, which may result in physiological damage and even death. ECOSOUND will study bottom-up effects exploring if noise may induce morphological changes in several invertebrate taxa. Species will be selected following the Krogh´s principle, i.e. choosing species better suited to study the biological questions posed. Here, we will select study species known to show phenotypic plasticity when exposed to stressors. Identifying developmental mechanisms of noise-effects is critical to predict potential common physiological paths over a wide range of taxa. Top-down effects will be investigated by comparing the life style of four species of deep-diving whales, and developing models to identify the reasons and potential consequences at the individual and population levels of the different vulnerability of these species to noise. For this, ECOSOUND will use the largest existing set of multi-sensor acoustic tag data of these whales, and apply quantitative ecology methods to develop bioenergetics models linking foraging and diving behaviour, metabolic rate, life history and social structure of the species. The results will inform transfer functions for PCAD models of Population Consequences of Acoustic Disturbance. ECOSOUND will strengthen the multidisciplinary research profile of the fellow with the fields of developmental biology and quantitative ecology, while contributing expertise on cetacean biologging studies and a new research line of noise-effects on marine invertebrates to USTAN. The results of ECOSOUND will be relevant for the EU Marine Framework Strategy in the emergent field of management of ocean noise.


I am member of the Research Group on Marine Biodiversity, Ecology and Conservation (BIOECOMAC) of the University of La Laguna (Tenerife, Canary Islands), where I direct research on cetaceans and marine bioacoustics. The main activities now  are: i) continuing a long term monitoring program of beaked whales off El Hierro (the smallest, most tropical and...without mass tourism! of the archipelago) started in 2003 (see photoID catalogue at www.cetabase.info);  ii) a ship-strike prevention working group targeted to reduce the strike mortality of sperm whales and other cetaceans (see Fais et al. 2016 below); iii) monitoring marine fauna from platforms of opportunity with the Cetacean and Seabird Sighting Net (www.aviste.me); iv) collaboration in acoustic research of the endangered little shearwater in Canarias for the conservation of this species (www.canariasconlamar.wordpress.info).
